This example of Rioja Tinto is part of a growing movement among Rioja producers to produce wines outside of the aging-based constraints of the traditional Rioja classifications of Crianza, Reserva and Grand Reserva, and to label the wine as simply Rioja instead. This allows, among other things, more flexibility to create wines that have more freshness and a more easy drinking and fruity profile. Viña Ijalba comes from the top tier subregion of Rioja Alta near the town of Logroño, where Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba planted his first vines in 1975 in disused quarry soils near an abandoned open-cast mine which gives the wines a remarkable minerality. Pioneers in organic farming in Rioja, the vineyards have been certified organic since 1996 and the 3rd generation to lead the winery, Christina Gutiérrez, is continuing that tradition. 100% Tempranillo, the grapes come from a north facing vineyard at 450 meters of elevation, that helps the vines retain acidity and lengthens the growing season, assuring optimal ripeness. Native yeast fermentation with gentle extraction and just 8 days on the skins keeps in check the robust tannins of Tempranillo that enable it, when made with that intention, to age gracefully for decades. This wine is aged for 8 months in stainless steel to keep the fruit in focus and is ready to drink now but will age gracefully for 5-8 years. Aromas of fresh black fruit, fresh flowers and incense. Smooth tannins deliver the brambly berry and mineral flavors with an impressive finish for a wine at this price point. Perfect with burgers, pizza or adobado pork tacos.
