The 2023 Working Holiday, crafted by Sherman Thacher, presents a vibrant blend of Mourvèdre (43%), Grenache (33%), Syrah (24%) from San Luis Obispo County's Cass and Homestead Hill vineyards, within the Geneseo District. This ruby-red wine embodies the unique terroir of the region, characterized by sandy, clay soils over calcareous rock. The winemaking process prioritized minimal intervention. Handpicked grapes underwent varying degrees of whole cluster inclusion, enhancing spice and structure. The Grenache and Syrah were co-fermented, while Mourvèdre was fermented separately, but all of them done naturally. The wine is aged in neutral puncheons, undergoing native malolactic fermentation. This blend offers a highly perfumed bouquet of red/blue fruit preserve, potpourri, licorice, and baking spice, underscored by mineral elements. There are alluring sweet black raspberry, cherry, and lavender flavors that are accented by cracked pepper. Silky tannins and a smoky mineral finish contribute to the wine's impressive persistence. This can be a stand alone delight or your BBQ companion.
