In much the same way Robert Mondavi put Napa Valley wine back on the map in the late 60s and 70s, Aurelio Montes was the pioneer of world-class-quality wines in Chile in the late 80s and 90s, becoming a national hero in the process. After the massive success of his Montes Alpha wines, Aurelio looked for a new challenge and founded Bodega Kaiken, named after the Caiquén, a South American species of goose that migrates between Chile and Argentina by flying over the Andes, in Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza in  2002. Along with championing quality in South American wine, Aurelio has long championed sustainability, so the farming and winery practices are all sustainable as well as regenerative, which is largely responsible for certification of both his Chilean and Argentinian wineries as Certified B Corporations. The grapes were hand harvested and sorted in the winery and fourty-percent of the wine was aged for six months in French oak barrels with the rest remaining unoaked in order to highlight the fruit flavors and aromas. This is a juicy, full-bodied red wine defined by ripe, intense black and blue fruit of plum, blueberry and blackberry with some warm, savory notes of black pepper, semisweet chocolate, and a hint of vanilla and even toffee. Bring on the barbecue (a personal plea for pulled pork!) and grilled meats.
