Gruner liter, Gruner liter, Gruner liter…hooray! Grüner Veltliner is the main, indigenous white grape of Austria, and this one comes from the region of northeastern Austria called Weinviertal (VINE-veer-tal, which translates to “Wine Quarter”), where the cooler climate lends a more pronounced green note, to which the name of the grape refers. Martin and Sylvia Hugl are a husband-wife team that began their own winery in 2006 and joined their families’ vineyards in 2013 with Martin supervising the vineyards, Sylvia handling the business aspects and both contributing to the winemaking. To preserve the land for their daughters, the farming is organic with an emphasis on cover crops and pest management through biodiversity. The vineyards are all located very close to the winery but the soils are diverse, giving an excellent composite picture of Gruner Veltliner that the stainless steel fermentation and aging preserves. Apple and pear with a touch of radish and white pepper? Heck yes. Serve it with chicken schnitzel, seared potatoes and arugula salad? Mmm-hmmm.
