We’ve had a few Rieslings over the years, but only once have we had one from the region many consider the pinnacle of the grape, the Mosel. Speaking of pinnacles, among those who admired the Mosel were Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon, and both named the Fritz Haag estate’s wines as their favorite white wines. Founded in 1605, the estate has maintained its position in the top ranks of white wine producers and is now run sustainably by Oliver Haag, the tenth generation. Now for the elephant in the room: is this a sweet Riesling? A little, yes, and that’s dandy. A touch of sweetness in wine does not make it less sophisticated, and this traditional style of Riesling is even more versatile for pairing than the trocken (dry). Real men eat quiche and pair it perfectly with an off-dry Riesling. This is a light and fairly intense wine aged and fermented in stainless steel to preserve its precision, that would pair well with fruit and strong cheese appetizers, spicy asian foods, fowl, ceviche, cream sauces, vinaigrettes, and almost anything else, really.
