If you’re ever invited to a wine industry party where everyone brings a bottle to share and you don’t know what to bring, the answer is a bottle of Jura. There is a wide array of grapes grown and a wide array of styles made from that multiplicity, and any of them will be appreciated by the industry persons in attendance. Jura is a region of Eastern France, between Burgundy and Switzerland and Arbois is the most important appellation within Jura. Poulsard (sometimes called Ploussard), an indigenous grape, is the most planted red grape in the region, which, when you consider that Pinot Noir has an ancient history in the region, is saying something. Poulsard is a very thin-skinned grape that makes very light-colored wine which could fool you into believing that there won’t be any tannins, but they are sneaky, with a delayed and building presentation. The flavors are of subtle red berries, spices and flowers. The second and third generation of the Rolet family have built one of the most prominent wineries in Jura. They employ sustainable-converting-to-organic farming in a region where that is a difficult feat. Pair this with poultry or pork and avoid fish.
