Gravennes translates to stony place and is an accurate description of the soils these grapes grow in. Now in their fourth generation of winemaking, brothers Luc and Remi Bayon de Noyer took charge from their mother Bernadette in 2011 and in that same year the family’s long history of organic farming was certified. Their biodynamic certification is in process and the lavender that is grown in and around the vineyards as part of that process makes a subtle but undeniable appearance in the wine. The traditional Rhône blend (GSM) shines here with 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre aged in large, 600 liter barrels of which only 10% are new, so that the intricacies of the fresh fruit, herbal and floral aromas aren’t drowned in vanilla and baking spices. The classic Rhône flavors of raspberry, plum, blackberry and bing cherry are augmented with waxy red apple, subtle rosemary and lavender. The much lower than average alcohol content and smooth tannins also help keep the focus on the lovely fresh flavors. Perfect with mediterranean-style meatballs, or any grilled meat.
