The two women behind Conceito Vinhos are Carla Costa Ferreira and her daughter, wine-maker, Rita Marques Ferreira. Rita, educated in Douro and Bordeaux and with professional experience in Douro, California, Bordeaux, New Zealand and South Africa, brings an international palate to her winemaking. This wine is made with the Austrian variety Grüner Veltliner which Rita felt strongly enough about to have planted on the family’s property. Even more daring, she made it into sparkling wine—hardly a power-house on the international market. Made using the Champagne method, the primary fermentation is done in used French oak barrels and the wine ages on the lees for a full two years. On the nose there is the brioche and fresh apple one expects in Champagne but the Grüner brings a little exotic fruit and exciting spices. It has balanced acidity and a very refined nose.
