Turning Tide is a new winery and vineyards from Alisa Jacobsen, a longtime winemaker at Joel Gott where she eventually managed a team of 30 winemakers, helping propel that winery to market dominance. Now striking out on her own, she has bought a couple vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley and is looking for more. The name Turning Tide ties into her concept of making wines within the fog zone of the ocean (and its tides), to turning the tide on climate by working only with organic and regeneratively farmed vineyards, and to her love of the ocean, diving and paddle boarding. Fog influenced vineyards ripen more slowly and when they do achieve perfect ripeness they do so at lower sugar levels and eventual alcohol levels in the wine. Alisa favors lower alcohol in wines so as to not cover over the more delicate aromas and flavors and this wine has just 12.5 %. She sulfurs the wines minimally for the same reasons. Verdelho is a Portuguese grape most famous for its off-dry Madeira wines, but which has a long history in California, mostly in El Dorado, where it is known for its citrusy and floral character, and the Verdelho in this blend comes from one of her new vineyards. Chenin Blanc is one of the most acidic white grapes, with flavors of apple, pear, pineapple core and lanolin. All of these flavors make an appearance.  This would be great with creamy pasta, spring vegetable soups and many hard cheeses.
