The Damonte family can trace their lineage in the Roero region back to the 1400s, the same time as the first mention of the Arneis grape. Coincidence? Definitely, but it's still appropriate for a family that has been one of the biggest proponents of their local grape. 42 of their 104 hectares are planted to Arneis with the average vine being 40 to 50 years old and all of them certified organic. Both mature vines and organic farming help to polish the rough edges off the “little rascal” as the name of the grape translates to in the local dialect, and the hand harvested grapes are also hand-destemmed, an almost unheard of use of labor that minimizes oxidation for this grape that is prone to it. Fermentation and aging in stainless steel also helps. All of this careful upbringing results in a classic Arneis with flavors of fresh pear and core, pear syrup, citrus blossom and green pluot, with crisp acidity balancing the full body. Excellent with salads or roast fowl.
