A fourth generation, family-owned vineyard and winery, Bodegas Care uses only estate fruit that is dry-farmed in the traditional, organic way, but then employs modern winemaking tools to elevate the wines even further. The alluvial plain along the Ebro River is extremely rocky, like that other bastion of Garnacha, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and with its 1800-2400 feet of elevation, the daily temperatures range is extreme and helps extend the growing season, thus adding complexity. Care is the Roman name for the town of Cariñena, but wine has been made in this part of Aragon by the Celts even before the Romans. As Garnacha Blanca (Grenache Blanc) is a mutation of Garnacha (Grenache) and Grenache is now known to have come from the island of Sardegna, the 60% percent of this blend that is Garnacha Blanca cannot claim to be an indigenous grape (and the 40% that is Chardonnay certainly cannot) but as the Kingdom of Aragon ruled Sardegna from 1297 to 1715, the Garnacha Blanca has long made a home in this part of the world. Sobre Lias simply means “on the lees”, which gives this wine a full mouthfeel and a touch of creamy flavors. Concentrated pear, tropical fruit and citrus with a touch of bitterness and stony minerality that will stand up to well seasoned chicken and vegetable dishes.
