Oregon Pinot Gris is a thing, and Ponzi Vineyards has been and remains the Oregon Pinot Gris of reference. Sounds expensive, but actually, there may not be a better value wine in the world. Dick and Nancy Ponzi were one of a handful of the original pioneers in Oregon wine when they acquired land to convert into vineyards in the late sixties. Dick’s wines went on to great acclaim and helped cement a place on the world wine map for Oregon. His daughters Luisa and Anna Maria have been running the winery for many years now, racking up accolades of their own. The Ponzi family has always been passionate about the stewardship of their lands and they have been LIVE Certified (the most ambitious sustainability standard in the world) for decades. A sale of the Ponzi brand, winery and a portion of vineyards is pending to the family that owns Bollinger (among other well-known wineries) but Luisa will stay on as winemaker, so I will hope to continue to enjoy their wines long into the future. This wine has flavors of pear, honeydew, lime, tangerine peel and blossoms, with enough acidity that it pairs with almost anything other than a steak.
