A plateau with an average elevation of 2100 feet, the wine region of Mantinia is distinct from the rest of the Pelopennese and here the Moschofilero grape reaches its pinnacle, almost literally. An ancient grape indigenous to Greece, Moschofilero is aromatic and acidic, and is made into many styles of wine: sparkling, still, rosé (as it is a pinky-grey skinned grape), and dessert. Often compared to Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Viognier, in this case there is a pronounced rose garden florality like a Gewurztraminer but with the lightness of body and citrusy crispness of Riesling. Domaine Spiropoulos was founded in 1870, is still family-owned, and the farming is sustainable and certified organic since 1993. The traditional pairing for this wine is appetizers such as fruits and cheeses, honey and nuts.
