Energetic winemaker Matthias Pippig’s use of multiple brands from geographically diverse regions has scored him an unprecedented double placement in a single Kompas Club selection. While the label specifies only Central Coast in order to grant the freedom that Pippig’s restless, constant experimentation requires, this vintage comes from Alisos Canyon, Ballard Canyon and Happy Valley, all of which lie in the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara. The 2022 Misfit blends 34% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah and 11% Grenache, a mix reminiscent of blends made in southwest France that combine Rhône and Bordeaux varieties. Fermented with 40% whole clusters and native yeasts, the wine spent 13 months resting on its lees and a total of 23 months in seasoned 400- and 500-liter French oak barrels before bottling without fining or filtration. The aromatic intensity with Rhône overtones might fool a blind taster into anticipating a Paso wine, but on the palate, the 13.5% alcohol, balanced with less acidity and moderate tannins, coat and activate the whole mouth in a refreshing way that Paso can’t replicate. Aromas of baking spice, blueberries, black cherry, sandalwood and wet flowers. Flavors of the aforementioned plus strawberries and red apple skin with. Lovely with pork bahn mi.
