From the bilingual northwest corner of Italy, where heroic viticulture is needed to produce wine on the soils of granite and quartz, comes a different version of Nebbiolo than is found just over the regional border in Piedmont. Nebbiolo, known locally as Picotendro, is the main variety grown here, but is a distinct biotype of the grape. The vines are trained onto high pergolas braced against the ancient terrace walls that one ascends via ladders and grapes are transported down via funicular during harvest. With these steep slopes everything must be done by hand. Sustainably grown, this wine is 100% Picotendro, fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to keep out of the way of the grape’s delicate aromas. Don’t let the light ruby color fool you, this wine is like the skinny guy in the gym that’s stronger than everyone else, the tannins are abundant yet supple. Bright notes of red raspberries and hints of mountain bramble and leather lead to a savory finish with hints of smoke making it a perfect foil for salamis, hard cheeses, dark chocolate and even a tangy fondue!
