Grosse Pierre means “large stone” and is the name of the vineyard in the Premiere Côtes de Vouvray, the steepest and rockiest section of Vouvray. Florent Cosme's family has an ancient history in the area, but being a younger son he did not inherit the family’s holdings. Instead, after getting his degree in enology he worked at other well known wineries until he could buy his own vineyards. He works on his own project on nights and weekends but is rapidly making a name for himself. Certified organic, and practicing biodynamic agriculture on vines of 45+ years of age, native yeast fermentation and aging in old, 400L barrels and the inhibition of malolactic fermentation lead to a wine that doesn’t lack for depth or character. Vouvray’s are made in all levels of sweetness, and, frustratingly, the label is not required to specifiy the level, but this is a dry Vouvray, suitable to have with intensely flavored dishes like mildly stinky cheese, or Indian food.
