This producer is located in the hills of the Maconnais, above the village of Pierreclos in the most southern part of Burgundy, just above Beaujolais. (Technically, Beaujolais is part of Burgundy, but is considered a separate entity in the wine industry.)  Established in 1983 by Jean-Luc Durossay, he and son Paul are the stewards of 15 hectares of well-established vineyards, some dating back over 100 years. Though Chardonnay is by far the main variety grown here, it is the Gamay from those very old vines planted on granitic soils that are typical of neighboring Beaujolais just to the South that produces their most distinctive and outstanding wine. The Gamay comes from vines at the highest elevation in the hills above Pierreclos. The sandy soil combines with the age of the vines to naturally limit yields to extremely low levels. The resulting wine has the sort of depth and extraction one would expect from a great red Burgundy, not the fruity style of wine often produced in neighboring Beaujolais. With its black cherry and raspberry fruit combined with earthy, peppery notes and bright acidity, this low-tannin wine pairs beautifully with poultry and seafood dishes and is a wonderful match with spicy Asian dishes.
