This blend of Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc is the ultimate crab wine. As is the case for whites from the actual Rhône Valley, a rich mouthfeel along with high acidity enables the wine to age gracefully, gaining a honeyed hazelnut note, while maintaining its freshness. The winemaker of Two Shepherds, William Allen, makes natural wines only from sustainably farmed Rhône grapes and always eschews new oak. It was Rhône blends that inspired him to make wine in the first place. These grapes hail from the acclaimed Catie’s Corner and Saralee’s vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma, one of only two plantings of Rhône grapes remaining in that land of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. After tasting it we think you will better understand the logic behind the 7% Solution movement. (We’ve explored that theme in past Kompas Wine Club selections, but it has to do with the fact that 93% of grapes in CA are planted to only eight grapes, whereas Old World countries have far more diversity. Can you name the Big 8? You can email us for the answer or just google it.) Flavors of green pluot, honey, hazelnut cream, fresh apricot and lemon.
