The Centonze family are wine merchants that search every year amongst the certified organic vineyards of the region around Vittorio to find the vineyards that are producing fruit that is the most representative of the terroirs of Sicily. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a denominazione with a mandated blend of Nero d’Avola and of Frappato grapes. Hard to categorize visually, it is somewhere between a deep rosé and a light red. The texture is light but firmer than the color would suggest--it pretty much charges down your throat. Not only is this a great expression of the region, but you also have the chance to taste some “age” in this wine. As wines age, the fruity, primary flavors that come directly from the grapes, in this case blackberry and black cherry, subside, revealing the secondary and tertiary flavors that result from the oxidation. The fruit is still present but in a more dried form, and the spicy and earthy characters that were crowded out now get more attention. The tannins are softer than in youth, but still supply a nice balance to the wine. This a fun bottle to try with umami foods and braised meats.
