The coastal influence is less pronounced than Rias Baixas, but the area still receives nearly a meter of rain per year while also receiving far more sunshine. Wine grapes thrive in this climate and winemaking in the region predates Roman arrival. The whites were exported sufficiently successfully in the Middle Ages to engender the Ordinances of Ribadavia in 1579, the first precursor to a geographical indication in Spanish law. The successive scourges of powdery mildew, downy mildew, and phylloxera, however, devastated the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After phylloxera, much of the region was replanted to disease-resistant and highly productive varieties like Palomino and Garnacha Tintoreira, to the detriment of native varieties and the centralized control of winemaking under Franco further delayed the return of quality wine. With the death of Franco in 1975 and Spain's re-emergence as a constitutional democracy and then EU membership in 1986, the table was set for a rapid revitalization of the wine industry here and throughout Spain. The Gonzalez-Vasquez family has a long history of wine growing here and began bottling their own wine and restoring the namesake casal (country house) into an enotourism destination in the late 1990s. Triexadura is the most highly regarded of the local varieties and comprises 90% of the blend here. Temperature controlled fermentation, blocked malolactic and aging on the lees for 9 months in stainless steel keeps the focus on brightness with white blossoms, fennel and hints of honey at first with lime, lychee, ginger and shale on the round palate and through the medium finish. It seems to want to be with cold things like a Galician-style seafood salad, chicken salad sandwiches or creamy cheeses.
