The coastal influence is less pronounced than Rias Baixas, but the area still receives nearly a meter of rain per year while also receiving far more sunshine. Wine grapes thrive in this climate and winemaking in the region predates Roman arrival. The whites were exported sufficiently successfully in the Middle Ages to engender the Ordinances of Ribadavia in 1579, the first precursor to a geographical indication in Spanish law. The successive scourges of powdery mildew, downy mildew, and phylloxera, however, devastated the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After phylloxera, much of the region was replanted to disease-resistant and highly productive varieties like Palomino and Garnacha Tintoreira, to the detriment of native varieties and the centralized control of winemaking under Franco further delayed the return of quality wine. With the death of Franco in 1975 and Spain's re-emergence as a constitutional democracy and then EU membership in 1986, the table was set for a rapid revitalization of the wine industry here and throughout Spain. The climate is continental, with cold winters, late frosts, and hot, dry summers. Rueda Blanco made from the local Verdejo grape was produced during the Roman empire and was drunk in the Spanish Court when it resided in Valladolid during the middle ages and it continued to be an important white wine until it nearly disappeared after phylloxera wiped out almost all the vineyards in the early 20th Century. When it came time to replant, the more famous and productive grape, Palomino from Jerez, was used and it wasn’t until the famed Rioja producer Marques de Riscal produced a Rueda using Verdejo in the 70s that the grape began its comeback, becoming the most popular white wine in Spain in the 1990s. Bodegas Cerrosol, a family estate based in Santiuste de San Juan Bautista near Segovia, farms vineyards in what many consider the finest sector of the appellation, where elevations between roughly 830 and 910 meters create wide day–night temperature swings that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. The region’s deep sandy soils—rare in Castilla y León—remain largely phylloxera resistant, allowing vines to grow on their own roots and contributing to the distinctive expression of Verdejo here. (Incidentally, another Rueda from this same area, the Nisia, also from very old vines on their own roots, was selected by a different brother for the June 2024 case.) The 2023 Viña Portalón takes its name from the vineyard itself, once reached through a large stone gateway that locals began referring to simply as “the big door.” The grapes are gently destemmed and cold macerated for several hours before fermentation in stainless steel at low temperature, followed by three months on the lees. The resulting wine shows the classic profile of Verdejo from this part of Rueda: straw yellow color with aromas of fennel, hay, and tropical fruit, and flavors of green melon, pluot, and almond paste with a touch of peach pit bitterness on the finish. Dynamic husband-and-wife duo Elena Penna and Luca Currado Vietti partnered with American businessman Kyle Krause beginning in 2016 to catapult Luca’s family’s winery, Vietti, into one of the most respected and largest wineries in Italy, but along the way they began to long for the more creative and simpler days when they ran a winery small enough for them to control all aspects. Once their contractual obligations to Vietti were fulfilled they launched Cascina Penna-Currado, a family project that includes their children Michele and Giulia, based in a restored 1554 cascina in Serralunga d’Alba. As they were one of the best producers of Timorasso at Vietti, Timorasso represents for them both continuity and renewal. Their 2024 Derthona comes from 15-year-old, east-facing vineyards in Berzano di Tortona rooted in Sant’Agata fossil marl, soils of compacted calcareous clay that contribute the variety’s characteristic savoriness and saline finish. We had his family’s rose sparkling wine in the club way back in December 2019 and we explained then that the quality of most Cava had become so bad that the Raventos i Blanc family had left the very denominacion they had helped create. Well, in 2020 the rules of the DO were changed markedly for the better and while the DO still includes scattered zones across Spain, the better zones are allowed to identify themselves on the label. In this case the Valls d’Anoia Foix refers to the limestone hills between the Anoia and Foix rivers, in the traditional homeland of Cava, the Penedès. Vins el Cep is a partnership among four historic Penedès families—the Carreras (Can Prats), Masana (Can Castany), Parera (Can Miquel de les Planes), and Esteve (Can Simón)—who joined forces in 1980 to farm their ancestral estates sustainably, some of whose masias date as far back as the 14th and 15th centuries. Germany today is the world’s third-largest producer of Pinot Noir after France and the United States, but nowhere else in Germany is the grape more closely tied to the reputation of a region than along the steep slopes of the Ahr. Medieval Cistercian, Benedictine, and Carthusian monk, the same orders that developed Burgundy, recognized the advantages of these south-facing terraces early on, and the region’s modern reputation rests on the same fundamentals: a cool macroclimate that demands optimal sun exposure, Devonian slate and volcanic soils that absorb and radiate heat, forested ridges that buffer cold northern winds, and sharply inclined vineyards that maximize ripening in a marginal environment. Founded in 1953 and now in its third generation, Ludwig Kreuzberg sustainably farms 9.5 hectares, much of which are Grosses Gewächs (equivalent to the french Grand Cru). The 2020 Devonschiefer (which is German for Devonian slate) is a blend from their steep, slate-dominated Grosses Gewächs parcels (blends cannot be labeled Grosses Gewächs\/GG) of 40–50-year-old vines at around 200 meters elevation, fermented and aged in largely neutral 300-liter oak and barrique. The wine shows black cherry, red apple and spice that reminds us of Russian River Pinot, but has a distinct mineral tone and firmer tannins that have smoothed nicely with 6 years of aging but will still benefit from decanting and would pair well with roast poultry, pork—or Schnitzel! One last note: the Ahr region was devastated by flooding in 2021, so this 2020 was rescued from a barrel in the flooded winery (wine barrels are water tight). With the encouragement of Bierzo’s most famous winemaker, Raul Perez, Argentine vintners Gerardo Michelini and Andrea Mufatto, working with their son Manuel, brought their ethos of precision and minimal intervention to Bierzo in 2015, settling in a 19th-century rock winery in Toral de Merayo. The dark, aromatic grape is best known for lending structure and spice to Rioja blends, though in Sardinia it has developed its own identity over centuries of cultivation. Despite its high quality, Cagnulari nearly disappeared in the mid-to-late twentieth century as growers replaced traditional varieties with more productive or internationally recognizable grapes. One of the producers who resisted that trend was Giovanni Cherchi, who began farming his family’s vineyards in 1970 and founded the estate in 1980, eventually becoming one of the first in the area to bottle Cagnulari on its own rather than using it strictly as a blending component. The vineyards lie in the limestone hills of Logudoro, where alternating ridges and valleys of vines and olive groves benefit from sea breezes from the nearby coast and notable day–night temperature swings that help preserve freshness in the warm Mediterranean climate. One of these historic estates, the Thalvin winery near the village of Ben Slimane in the Zenata region, dates to the 1920s and sits roughly forty kilometers inland where Atlantic breezes and elevations around 500 meters help moderate summer temperatures. Famed Northern Rhône producer Alain Graillot encountered the vineyards of what he recognized as Syrah while bicycling through the region and later arranged to work with the parcels. The sites lie on clay-rich soils over limestone and ancient marine sediments, conditions that retain moisture while preserving the grape’s aromatic lift in an otherwise warm climate, and which differ from the alluvial soils of the Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage wines.
