Barbaresco is considered to be one of the world’s best wine regions with proper examples starting in the $45-$50 range and accelerating quickly from there for the more famous producers. A wine as good as this at well below the expected price is exceedingly rare. Without getting too inside baseball, the only circumstance where a wine this good can be had for this little is when the importer happens to live in your area and directly distributes (i.e. has a sales force and delivers the wine). Happily that is the case with this wine and we are passing the savings on to you! The La Ca’ Nova estate used to sell their grapes exclusively to the most famous Barbaresco producer of all time Angelo Gaja (Nicknamed Angelo God), but have been making their own wine for decades now. The grapes are grown organically and the winemaking is very traditional with native yeast fermentation, long maceration on the skins and aging in large oak casks, called botti, that give no flavors of oak to the wine and allow less exposure to oxygen than smaller barrels. Great with hearty, fatty cuts of meat.
